Level 1 is all about listening to and awareness of sounds. It is split into 7 aspects - your child will be learning these skills (regardless of the chosen phonics scheme) if they attend preschool or nursery.

 

Tricky words (or common exception words) do not work phonetically - children have to learn these words by sight.

Each new phoneme has an action and picture to match:

Level 4 is a consolidation level, learning about phoneme blends i.e. tr in trap or sl in slot. There are no new phonemes in this level.
